Hundreds
of youths on Tuesday stormed the National Assembly demanding the passage into law
of ‘not too young to run' bill, which was recently proposed by lawmakers.
Former
Chairman Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu addressed the coalition of
youth groups at the Unity Fountain before they marched to the National Assembly.
According
to Odinkalu, the future of the country is in the hands of the youth. After the
address the youths proceeded to the National Assembly where they were prevented
from entering after which they shut down the main gate and blocked the roads,
refusing vehicles from entering or leaving the premises.
Senator
Dino Melaye, representing members of the upper and lower chambers of parliament
who later address the protesters promised that the issue is being given careful
attention.
The
bill when passed into law is to opens government offices to younger Nigerians. The
bill seeks to reduce the age qualification for those aspiring to office of
president from forty to thirty years, office of governor from thirty five to
thirty years, senate from thirty five to thirty years and the federal and state
houses of assemblies from thirty to twenty five years.
