Senator Gbenga Ashafa |
Nigeria’s Senate
says its intention to amend the Railway Corporation Act of 1955 is driven by
the need to revitalize and enhance the operational framework and removal of
impediment that hinders rail transportation in Nigeria.
Chairman, Senate
Committee on Land Transport, Gbenga Ashafa, made the submission at a one-day
Public Hearing on the Nigeria Railway Corporation in Abuja.
Senator Ashafa
decried the present condition of railways in Nigeria, stressing that between
the 50s and 70s, Nigeria's railway system operated efficiently and safely.
Declaring the
Public Hearing open, Senate President Bukola Saraki emphasized the need for the
quick passage of the Bill so as to ensure the standardisation of rail
transportation thereby removing pressure on Nigerian roads.
The bill which
was sponsored by Senator Andy Uba was first read on the floor of the senate
last year 2015.
