Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremmadu |
A mild drama
ensued at the upper legislative chambers of the National Assembly as the deputy
senate president Senator Ike Ekweremadu presided over plenary, due to the fact
that the Senate President was at the Presidential villa for the inauguration of
Ministers.
Senators of the
All Progressives Congress APC Unity forum opposed to the emergence of Ike
Ekweremmadu as deputy senate president boycotted Wednesday’s plenary.
The APC lawmakers
insist that a member of the minority Peoples Democratic Party PDP cannot
preside over the majority, adding that it is a conspiracy against the ruling
party.
Speaking to
newsmen, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi said while President Buhari was inaugurating
ministers at the Federal executive council meeting with the president of the
senate present at the event, the deputy senate president presided over the
majority membership of the APC led chamber.
However, in his
reaction, spokesman of the Senate, Aliyu Abdulahi said there is no such
conspiracy in the red chamber as senators of both parties have agreed to work
harmoniously in the interest of Nigerians.
Wednesday’s
plenary is the first time that senator Ekweremmadu is presiding over plenary
since his emergence as the deputy senate President of the 8th Senate under the
platform of PDP.
