Nigeria's former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe, is
dead. He was 68. Akhigbe, whose position in the Armed Forces Ruling
Council (AFRC), headed by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, made him the
military vice-president in the government that return Nigeria to
democracy in 1999, died at the weekend in England.
It was gathered that Akhigbe had been battling with cancer for some time before his appointment as the chief of general staff, following the death of the then Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, in 1998.
Akhigbe attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Royal Naval School of Maritime Operations Dryad, Southwick the United Kingdom, Command and Staff College Jaji, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru and University of Poitiers, Rouan, France.
It was gathered that Akhigbe had been battling with cancer for some time before his appointment as the chief of general staff, following the death of the then Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, in 1998.
After his retirement from the Force, Akhigbe went to read law and became
an attorney with specialisation in Maritime and Real Estate Law. He was
a seasoned businessman with substantial interests in real estate.
Akhigbe attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Royal Naval School of Maritime Operations Dryad, Southwick the United Kingdom, Command and Staff College Jaji, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru and University of Poitiers, Rouan, France.

Meanwhile family members of the of the former Chief of General Staff, Admiral
Mike Akhigbe have described as untrue, online reports that the former number
two man died in a London hospital.
Contrary to the reports of his alleged death, elder brother of the Admiral, Chief Joseph Akhigbe, said the news about his death was shocking to the family because ‘’ it is not true and it is really embarrassing to us’’.
He emphasized that his brother is stabilizing in an American hospital and not even London as being reported.
