A new form of robbery has surfaced in the FCT where some cab drivers dispossess unsuspecting passengers who enter their vehicles, of
their hard-earned money and other valuables, in local parlance its called one chance. In fact, the
increase in the activities of these hoodlums who pretend to be responsible cab drivers is more noticeable in the city centre and
it is assuming a frightening dimension.
Masquerade234 gathered that the trend started with unpainted taxi, however people say the painted green and white taxi's also carry out such nefarious activities, a recent one been when a yougn lady was robbed
and stabbed in different areas of her body by a green and white Abuja
cab driver. Residents say the are no longer safe and it is really disturbing
because it keeps happening everyday.
These cab drivers mostly operate at
night, they carry a passenger and drive towards a lonely road, then
another person who has been hiding inside the boot of the car comes out
from behind the passenger’s seat and points a sharp object to the
passenger’s head or neck. They both drag the belongings of the passenger
and push them out of the moving vehicle leaving them with serious
injuries or even worse.
When Masquerade234 spoke with the FCT Commissioner of Police Femi Ogunbayode, he said emphasized that his men are doing everything to stem the tide, and he urged people to be safety cautious at all times.
Here are some tips to ensure your safety.
- Always check the boot of the taxi, whether painted or unpainted to be sure there is no body inside.
- Sit at the passengers seat very close to the door i.e behind the driver (should in case you notice any funny movement so you can easily run out )
- Wind down the windows
- If the driver picks up his phone to receive a call, make sure you pay attention to his conversation to be sure he isn’t alerting his partner on your movement. Masquerade234 would want to hear your experience if you've encountered any.
