in August. 1941 in Minna. Niger State and enlisted into the Nigerian
Army in 1962. Promoted Lieutenant in 1963 and Captain in 1968 when he
became Commander of the 44 infantry Battalion He was moved to the Nigerian Defense Academy, Kaduna in
1970 as an Instructor and Commander 4 Reconnaissance Regiment and Army
Armoured Corps in 1975. He rose to the rank of Brigadier-General in
1979 and with the military take-over of government in 1983. became Chief
of Army Staff and member of the Supreme Military Council (SMC).
Babangida is of Gwari origins in the middle belt region of Nigeria, he is a devout Muslim and was Nigeria's sixth military ruler and, by 1990 he was declared the most powerful ruler the country has ever witnessed..
