the issue of food security seem to be occupying the front burner in Nigerians social economic life, and this has made civil society organization like Oxfam to launch its voices for food security to draw attention to the need for food security to be on the front burners in national policy formulation.
Already the country is already feeling the pangs of food scarcity with the huge rural urban migration, thereby leaving our farmlands to lay fallow. this has already giving rise to the amount used by Nigeria to import food annually. Presently the country use one billion naira daily to import rice for consumers.
People its high time we start thinking in line with the green revolution of yester years or the operation feed the nation of olusegun obasanjo military era, thats not all we also have the school to land program of the rivers state government of the past, all these were intended to give agriculture a boost and ensure our food security.
Oxfam round table with media editor however brought to the fore the need for journalist to give adequate attention to issues relating to food security.
There is need also for government to review it land use decree to make land available and affordable for farmers to farm, even the agric ministry need to be proactive in ensuring that the nation is food secured at all times.
Minister of agriculture Akinwummi Adeshina understands this and he is already addressing issues affecting the sector from performing maximally. he also resolved that the federal government will hands off fertilizer distribution, so as to reduce the incidence of middle men in the whole process.
