Fomer Finance Minister Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala |
Former Minister of Finance, Dr.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says the Excess Crude Account was used to pay for fuel
subsidies for Nigerians and that the payments were discussed by the Federation
Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) in which all the tiers of government are
represented.
A statement issued by her media
adviser in Abuja, Paul Nwabuikwu says the recent statement by Finance Commissioners
confirms that the Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC is a statutory
body for all tiers of government chaired by the Minister of State and not an
Okonjo-Iweala affair.
He added that at no time did
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala say that FAAC approved such expenditures; rather what she
said was that all the expenditures were discussed at FAAC meetings attended by
Finance Commissioners from the 36 states; therefore a question of mismanagement
of resources does not arise.
She thanked the Finance
Commissioners for confirming that FAAC is a collective affair and not a
personal monopoly.
He wondered why payments which were
statutorily made and publicly announced to end fuel queues and stop the
suffering of Nigerians have become a tool for blackmail and character
assassination.
The statement described
attempts at damaging the reputation of Dr.Okonjo-Iweala as malicious and
politically motivated and called for a stop to her needless persecution.
